What If You Knew - NM
Supporting the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign
                    Choices

You can choose your doctor.  That may not seem like a big deal.  Think about this, medical practice
cannot be performed by robots.  People, doctors, have personalities, and you should be able to go to
a doctor that you trust, not just any doctor.  You will get well faster if you trust your doctor, probably
because you will better follow the advice of someone that you like and trust.

I recently had to change doctors because my employer changed insurance companies.  The new
doctor is a very nice man and seems to be good.  I really miss the doctor that I have had for over 20
years.  We had a relationship.  He knows my wife and my children, other influences on my wellness
and my willingness to follow his advice.  Sometimes that is an incalculable value, but a doctor in a box
can never get to that position.

In addition to being able to choose your doctor under the Health Security Act you can choose the
hospital or clinic that you prefer.  Health Insurance companies have become extremely dictatorial
about where and with whom you can get care and even if they are going to pay for the visit or
treatments that you received.  This is the state of health care in American today and is a very important
reason why we need to move from the insurance company controlled system to a system where we
choose our doctors, hospitals, and clinics.  A system that focuses on our health care and not on their
profit.

Among the many different systems being proposed for health care reform the main common factor is
insurance company control.  The Health Security Act is different, you are in control.  The only plans that
seem to be getting political support are plans that rely on health insurance companies.  The Health
Security Act reduces what we will pay monthly and what our city, county, and state governments pay for
health care for everybody else in the state.  The insurance companies are not offering that to us.
