Supporting the Health Security for New Mexicans Campaign
What is Health Security?
Health Security is simply being secure that your health is good and if not there are ways to obtain care to return you to good health.
Health Security is knowing that no illness or injury will cause such a financial burden that you would lose your home and your other belongings.
Health Security is knowing that your children can and will receive whatever health care they need no matter what your financial situation.
Health Security should be a human right.
What is the Health Security Act?
The Health Security Act is a bill being considered by the New Mexico State Legislature that will provide health care for all New Mexicans.
The Health Security Act operates like a co-op. Everybody pays in and anybody receives benefit, sort of like our fire departments, police departments, water co-ops, electric co-ops, etc.
The Health Security can also be described as a single-payer universal coverage plan.
The Health Security Act will pay for care equal to the current New Mexico State Employee's health insurance benefits.
Where will the money come from?
The Health Security premiums will be collected by the New Mexico Department of Tax and Revenue.
Medicare and Medicaid funds that are presently given to the state by the federal government will be used by the Health Security Plan.
Money that is in the state and county indigent funds will be administered by the Health Security Plan.
Employers may contribute for their employees as a benefit for working for them.
Some of these details will be worked out by the Legislative Finance Council when the plan is enacted.
Who will benefit from the Health Security Act?
All New Mexicans will benefit because all New Mexicans will have access to the health care that they need which will make all of us healthier.
Who will lose if we enact the Health Security Act?
The insurance companies will no longer be making the high profits that they have been getting over the last 35 or more years.
